Green Infrastructure Climate Investment Corridor
Lille
Planning
(Sub)urban residential area
The city of Lille was built on the Deûle’s valley, a forest and swamp’s landscape that is rich in natural resources. Drainage of most of the canals in the 19th century and the construction of defensive constructions has led to densification and mineralization of the historical centre. This causes a number of climate challenges; heat stress through the creation of urban heat islands, an increase of drought periods, fluvial flooding and low air quality.
The municipality will develop a network of green urban areas throughout the city. A number of priority areas are selected based on an analysis of urban heat islands, urban freshness islands and socio-demographic characteristic. In these areas, climbing plants and trees are planted to reduce heat stress and improve air quality. This will have positive effect on biodiversity and improves the living environment for citizens, for example trough creation of recreation and leisure spaces.
